The annual murmuration sees thousands of starlings visit Brighton Seafront to perform their aerial dance between the Palace Pier and West Pier at sunset. Starlings are thought to perform this display for safety in numbers, to exchange information and to separate into groups to roost together for warmth.
b. Pink Moon and the Peace Statue:
Native Americans gave April's Full Moon its name after a pink wildflower that blooms in spring. The Moon can be seen here rising behind the Peace Statue, a memorial to Edward VII (‘The Peacemaker’), unveiled in 1912.
c. Royal Pavilion and Pleiades (starry sky):
The stars above the Pavilion include the Pleiades star cluster (known as the Seven Sisters) which can be seen above the left turret. The Pavilion was constructed between 1787-1823, a Grade I listed former royal residence.
d. Milky Way over the Palace Pier:
The Milky Way’s galactic centre dominates the sky above Brighton’s Palace Pier, opened in 1899. The darker parts of the Milky Way are interstellar dust lanes, an accumulation of gas, plasma and dust. The pink nebulae found in the core are named Eagle, Omega and Lagoon.
e. Starling Murmuration high above the i360:
Starlings fly in unison above Brighton seafront and the 162 metre high i360 observation tower. Starlings use the Earth’s magnetic field to help navigate their way to Brighton during their annual migration.
f. Milky Way and Jupiter above the Chattri:
Set in the hills of the South Downs, the Chattri is a memorial to the Indian soldiers who fought during the First World War. Facing south towards Brighton the Milky Way can be seen rising above the Chattri with Jupiter to its right.
g. Clock Tower Christmas Lights:
The Clock Tower is a Classical-style structure with Baroque touches, built in 1888 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The time ball atop the tower was designed by local inventor Magnus Volk.
